You’re aware of the job title “Data Analyst,” and it sounds to you like a fascinating career choice. The thought of working with data and technology is right up your alley, but what does a data analyst actually do?

Data analysts spend their working day digging into big data and making it usable for their company. Their daily activities include analyzing data systems, automating information retrieval, and preparing reports that show managers how data could be applied to their business or solve a particular problem.

A day in the life of a data analyst

At Treliant, we operate in the domains of regulation and innovation in the financial markets. Our clients are global banks. Our data analysts can expect to spend their time collecting, processing, and performing statistical analyses on large financial datasets and compiling their findings into reports that can help improve our clients’ businesses and address market issues.

Treliant analysts can be involved in any part of the analysis process. In a data analyst role, you could be included in everything from setting up an analytics system to providing insights based on the data you collect. Over time you will be asked to train others as well.

Relational database development gave a new breath to data analysts by using the programming language SQL to retrieve data from databases. At Treliant, you will use SQL to query databases. You will also be responsible for designing dashboards, monitoring KPIs, and maintaining relational databases.

Working at Treliant, you will be trained in programming languages such as Python/R, dashboarding software like Power BI/Tableau, as well as other industry-leading applications, which will give you the right set of tools to deliver results and further your career.

In addition to technical skills, you will also further develop strong verbal and written communication skills. At Treliant, you will have the opportunity to drive project meetings and engage with senior leaders. Translating the results of data-driven analysis into actionable insights for client stakeholders is a core skill of any data analyst.

At Treliant, we are always thinking about how innovative technologies can assist our client’s needs. Recently, the data team in Belfast worked on a project with an abundance of messy/unstructured data.  Here’s how we approached it:

  • We recognised this information should be appropriately housed, setup up an SQL database, and structured the information to tidy the data principles.
  • We built efficient ETL (extract, transform, load) scripts to update/edit our database.
  • Given Microsoft Excel’s ubiquity in financial services, we used Visual Basic for Applications to automate routine reporting requirements.
  • We had a requirement to source additional data, so we developed a Python-based web scraper to source information from websites.
  • We used the visualisation library Plotly to explain our findings and present our progress.

Opportunity to work with senior subject matter experts

Data Analyst roles are becoming increasingly complex. A career at Treliant will give you the chance to work with our experienced analysts. They will teach you to use modeling and predictive analytics techniques to generate valuable insights and actions.

So, if you are an analytical, challenge-oriented, adaptable self-starter who relishes the prospect of working in a dynamic environment with significant opportunities for industry exposure and career development, we want to hear from you.
