James Lustig, an Engagement Director with Treliant, has 20 years of financial services industry experience. His areas of expertise include residential mortgage loan origination and servicing, preparing for and executing regulatory compliance examinations, risk assessment, compliance management systems, consumer lending, third-party risk management, complaint review and trending analysis, and financial fraud investigation. In addition, James has experience in developing, implementing, and testing key controls for managing the regulatory compliance responsibilities of financial institutions.
Prior to joining Treliant, James served as the Lending Compliance Officer for a Midwestern community bank with $6 billion in assets. In this capacity, he helped reduce the bank’s audit defect rate by over 15 percent and led the lending units through numerous regulatory changes, including the implementation of the TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosures (TRID) rule. James was formerly an Examiner with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and with the State of Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, where he led or was a part of an examination team for some of the nation’s largest banks. In total, he has served as Examiner in Charge of more than 50 state and federally licensed financial services entities. James not only has control and regulatory knowledge of mortgage origination requirements, but gained hands-on operational knowledge of the mortgage origination process as a Senior Loan Officer with GMAC Mortgage Corp., where he consistently ranked in the top 10 percent for annual origination volume. James’ lending experience includes conforming FNMA and FHLMC, FHA, VA, and non-conforming jumbo mortgage loan products.
With his comprehensive experience in lending and compliance, James brings a multifaceted perspective to matters of compliant lending, servicing, risk management, and audit. He provided critical insight and leadership while guiding his previous employer through a rigorous compliance and fair lending examination that was instrumental in paving the way for an acquisition creating a Midwestern banking powerhouse.
James holds a BBA from Northwood University, an MS in Economic Crime Management from Utica College, and an MS in Forensic Accounting from Southern New Hampshire University. He is also a Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
